PALM SPRINGS, CA — A suspect was arrested Monday on suspicion of setting two blazes in Palm Springs, including one that injured a firefighter and damaged a casita at a Palm Springs residence, fire officials said. The first blaze was reported at around 4:50 a.m. at a residence in the 350 block of South Palm Canyon Drive, according to Palm Springs Fire Department Capt. Nathan Gunkel. The blaze was doused by sprinklers before crews arrived, he said, adding that no one was injured and no property was destroyed. The second blaze was reported in the 500 block of Calle Abronia around 11:30 a.m. and heavily damaged a casita located on the property, Gunkel said. Four engines were deployed to the scene and the fire was contained in about 15 minutes, he said. Gunkel said one firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries of unspecified severity. No other injuries were reported. According to Gunkel, a suspect allegedly linked to both blazes was taken into custody by Palm Springs police, but he released no other details and police could not immediately be reached.
