CONCORD, NH — Seven New Hampshire public charter schools, including ones located in Concord and Nashua, received nearly $7 million in the first round of grants connected to a $46 million federal program to expand opportunities for students in the Granite State. According to the New Hampshire Department of Education, four new schools — the Gathering Waters Chartered Public School in Keene, the Heartwood Public Charter School, which will be located in Coos County, the Northeast Woodland Chartered Public School in North Conway, and Spark Academy of Advanced Technologies in Manchester will receive between $1.2 million and $1.5 million for their new charter schools. Two schools — the MicroSociety Academy Charter School in Nashua and The Founders Academy in Manchester are receiving around $600,000 to expand while CSI Charter School in Concord was awarded nearly $340,000. The new schools, after starting up and meeting identified priorities — including targeting services for at-risk students, "showcasing unique and innovative educational programs not widely offered in the state," as well as assisting under-served areas of the state, can receive an additional $300,000 as part of the grant process. The schools that are expanding are offering new enrollments at new grade levels with more educational programming, according to the state. CSI was selected for a replication grant to provide funds to start another program in the state. "Having worked in public charter schools for the last two decades, I know the positive influence that an education program that fits the child can be," Tal Bayer, the state charter school administrator, said. "We are working with all of our programs to bring excellent and innovative educational opportunities to all students." Another round of grants will be released later this year.
