ALTON, NH — A Concord man was rescued on Monday after passing out while descending down from the summit of Mount Major, according to New Hampshire Fish & Game Department. Kenneth Burwen, 68, was hiking with a family member when he lost consciousness after leaving the summit around 3 p.m. He was about a quarter of a mile down the blue trail from the summit, according to Lt. Bradley Morse of Fish and Game. A conservation officer and members of the Alton Fire Department arrived at the trailhead and around 3:45 p.m., assessed Burwen, and began to carry him down the mountain. Gilford and Gilmanton firefighters as well as Lakes Region Search and Rescue also arrived to assist. After about a half-mile, Burwen was met by a side-by-side and he was taken down the rest of the way, about another three-quarters of a mile. Due to his condition, the DHART helicopter was requested and after arriving at the trailhead around 5 p.m., Burwen was flown to Concord Hospital. Morse said anyone can donate funds via the New Hampshire Outdoor Council, which supports visitors to the state's backcountry, linked here. Donations are fully tax-deductible, he added. Outdoor enthusiasts are also encouraged to purchase a Hike Safe card at wildnh.com/safe. The card helps support Fish and Game search and rescue activities.
