CONCORD, NH — The unemployment rate for July remained steady in New Hampshire, at 2.9 percent, according to the latest data, published on NHPR. The summer vacation season and tourism influenced the numbers as thousands of people were hired in the hospitality sector. According to the state, there were more than 40,000 people working in July compared to July 2020. Meanwhile, there are help wanted signs everywhere and more than 30,000 job listings on Indeed.com. Here is everything else going on in New Hampshire right now. Cutting Back On Buses COAST, a bus line that services communities on the Seacoast, including Dover, Newington, Portsmouth, and Somersworth, is cutting back on runs due to lack of drivers, according to WMUR-TV. Property Tax Worries In Bedford New Hampshire property values — and taxes, are high, and as the housing crunch continues, driving costs on available units even higher, assessments are rising, too, to the point of "eye-popping" in Bedford, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader. Is it me … Or are the mosquitos really bad outside lately? Divebombing on your neck and legs in the middle of the sun? All that rain has surely led to the breeding of a lot more bugs lately. On Tuesday, the New Hampshire Democratic Party sent out a story by American Independent, a "digital platform for progressive news," with the headline, "New Hampshire governor gives millions in school funds to for-profit education company." The posts noted that $6 million, or less than 4 percent of pandemic school aid monies, was awarded to Prenda for a two-year contract to assist in setting up "micro-schools," either via school districts or independently, with guides for students outside of the traditional school structure. Prenda, the report stated, has previously been supported by "multiple nonprofits linked to petrochemical billionaire Charles Koch." Also on Tuesday, Keith Spiro, who hosts a podcast on ManchesterInkLink.com, posted an interview with the founder of Prenda, Kelly Smith, who speaks about the service here: "Back to the future of school with Prenda and learning pods" Evil tool of a Koch brother or a for-profit company attempting to assist students with smaller structures and personalized learning? Read both articles and decide for yourself. Thank You, Rotary Club Of Concord A big "thank you" to the Rotary Club of Concord for allowing me to speak with them on Tuesday about Patch, life in Concord, and a bit of history, too. Thank you, Gary, for the invite. It was good to see you, Nancy, PJ, and everyone else, too. Don't miss the club's 21st annual golf tourney on Aug. 26 (I hear there are still some slots left).
