LA GRANGE, IL – Lyons Township High School expects students to wear face masks in the coming school year, the school's principal said Monday.
The first day for all Lyons Township students is Thursday.
"In the event students do not comply, we will work through our normal procedures as it relates to student discipline," Principal Jen Tyrrell said in a statement titled "Welcome to the 2021-2022 School year." "We will, of course, begin with a supportive conversational approach, and partner with students and families to ensure that students comply."
Tyrrell said the school has a variety of tools available when it works with students in such situations.
"Ultimately, students who refuse to comply with the District's masking requirements will be subject to discipline," the principal said.
She did not indicate the type of discipline. But she noted that Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a mask mandate for all schools a couple of weeks ago.
Last school year, student masking was a little-discussed issue in the area because parents focused on returning their children to in-person learning. Over the summer, though, mask mandates have become an emotional topic, with opponents saying families should be able to choose whether their children wear them.
