JOLIET, IL — Joliet police arrested 29-year-old Herbert Bew late Monday night after police say he refused to pull over his car, crashing into a concrete barrier near Richards Street and Interstate 80 before running away. Officers captured Bew and found the gun that he tossed during the chase, police said.
Bew was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer, aggravated speeding and obstructing a peace officer. Bew lives in the 500 block of Water Street.
According to police, patrol officers tried to stop Bew's car near Manhattan Road and Richards Street for a traffic violation. Bew initially pulled over, but then he drove off as officers walked up to his car, police reports show.
After fleeing the Joliet police, Bew crashed into a concrete barrier, and that's when he tried to make a run for it.
"During the chase, officers observed Bew discard a firearm as he ran," Sgt. Dwayne English announced. "Officers quickly caught up to Bew and placed him into custody without incident. The discarded firearm was recovered by officers at the scene."
