Joyous day, my fellow Portlandians, and happy Fajita Day! That's right, it's not just any Wednesday, it's a day to celebrate one of the tastiest Tex-Mex creations. But I have to control my hunger long enough to tell you about today. There's more than fajitas on the menu. First, today's weather: The sun is back, but, fear not, the high temp will be a very manageable 83. Now this is the Portland summer I'm used to. Here are the top stories today in Portland: If you thought you saw military-looking fighter jets racing across the Portland sky, you are not hallucinating. U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornets flew in from their base in Virginia last week and have been training with the Oregon Air National Guard's F-15s. In case you're wondering, they'll be here until the end of the week. (KATU)Oregon Gov. Kate Brown extended the state's residential mortgage foreclosure moratorium on Monday. Authorized by House Bill 2009, the moratorium extension will prevent homeowning Oregonians from losing their homes to foreclosure if they've lost income during the pandemic. The new expiration date for the moratorium is Dec. 31st. (KOIN)COVID continues to rage through the state as the Oregon Health Authority reports 4,396 new cases and 14 new deaths over the weekend. Hospitalizations continue to rise in Oregon, reaching another new record high Monday. This sustained COVID surge may be part of the reason the OHA, following the FDA's lead, approved a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine for some immunocompromised people. (KGW)A brazen downtown kidnapping, intended as retaliation for a marijuana dispensary burglary, involved 3 armed men, one of whom was a Portland firefighter. The victim was found unharmed and the 3 men arrested, their charges ranging from kidnapping to assault. (KGW) The Portland Police Bureau has had its share of problems, the latest being the inability to fully staff its anti-gun violence unit, named the Focused Intervention Team (FIT). One of the sticking points is exactly how the oversight team for the unit will operate. Made up of community members appointed by City Council, some activists question whether they will really hold the team accountable or whether they just serve as PR. (Instagram)For those interested in Portland history, particularly those interested in the sidewalks of Portland, this report by David Hampsten may make for great reading. It addresses, among other things, the "long-standing myth among citizens and government officials alike — that all of Portland's local streets were paid for by the abutting property owners." (Bike Portland)Livingscape is a great little nursery in North Portland. The neighborhood was sad to find it would lose the nursery, as the owners announced they would be leaving their Boise neighborhood space. But that was before Tim and Shawna O'Neal took it over. Now, years later, the O'Neals talk with Portland Monthly about what running the nursery has been like and houseplant tips for everyone. (Portland Monthly)On Thursday, Aug. 19th, the group Portland by Cycle will be hosting a leisurely ride based on the Sunday Parkways Green Loop. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. After experiencing difficulty getting a trailer to move from Los Angeles to Portland, Sam and Anna Mary Shoen opened the first U-Haul in the summer of 1945.
