NORTH CAROLINA — Tuesday morning got off to a shaky start in western North Carolina due to a 2.7 magnitude earthquake. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Tuesday's earthquake occurred around 9:19 a.m. and was centered about 4 miles north of Morganton, North Carolina. While it was a minor rumble, the USGS received reports that it was felt more than 60 miles away in Charlotte and the Mooresville area. (Source: U.S. Geological Survey) The quake occurred in the Inland Carolinas Region, which experiences small earthquakes about once every year or two, the USGS said. The largest earthquake in the region, which was a 5.1 magnitude, was recorded in 1916.
