DETROIT, MI —A Dearborn Heights man was arrested early Friday and charged with stealing a marked patrol vehicle after he allegedly got into a police car and drove away while officers were investigating a fight outside a Dearborn bar, Wayne County prosecutors said. Peter Michael Oleary, 43, was pursued by officers and apprehended at Beaumont Hospital after he struck an unoccupied, security vehicle, according to police. Oleary, who was treated for minor injuries, was charged with one count of fleeing and eluding, one count of receiving and concealing stolen property, one count of unlawfully driving away an automobile and one count of reckless driving, prosecutors said. According to prosecutors, Oleary was arraigned Monday in the 19th District Court and given a $100,000 cash/ surety bond. At approximately 1:48 a.m. Friday morning, according to police reports, officers responded to calls about a fight in a parking lot outside a Dearborn bar in the 22140 block of Outer Drive. While police were investigating, Oleary allegedly stole the police vehicle at the scene, police said. Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said Friday that an investigation was underway into the circumstances leading to the alleged theft of the vehicle. "Clearly, this outcome is not one that is anticipated from a well-trained workforce. It is another reminder that I do not exist in a perfect world. An investigation into this matter in its entirety is ongoing," Haddad said. Prosecutors said Oleary's probable cause conference is scheduled for Aug. 27 in 19th District Court.
