CUMMING, GA — This summer has been difficult for animal shelters across the nation, with slow adoption rates and full capacities. In an effort to save more animals in need, Furkids is joining forces with Bissell Pet Foundation for the emergency empty the shelter event through Sunday, Aug. 22. Adoptions will be $25, and will focus on large dogs 40-pounds or more, adult cats six months or older, and senior dogs 7-years-old or older. "We are in dire need of community support, especially with an average of 11 pets entering our shelter each and every day," Furkids Founder and CEO Samantha Shelton said in a news release. "To support Furkids' lifesaving mission, the community can get involved by adopting, fostering, volunteering, and donating, as well as ensuring all owned pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations, have a microchip and are spayed or neutered." The following Furkids locations will partake in the emergency "Empty the Shelter" adoption event from Aug 16-22: Furkids Headquarters (cats only) at 5235 Union Hill Road, Cumming, GA 30040 Furkids Dog Shelter at 1520 Union Hill Road Cumming, GA 30040Furkids at PetSmart and Petco adoption centers throughout the metro-Atlanta area. During this nationwide event, Bissell Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees for $25 per dog or cat. This emergency event will be hosted in more than 80 shelters in 27 states, including Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters. The empty the shelters event began in 2016 as an effort to encourage more families to adopt a pet into their home. Since its inception, Bissell Pet Foundation has expanded its reach to organizations in 45 states and Canada, partnering with a total of 414 shelters. The goal of this emergency adoption event is to find forever homes for pets often overlooked in animal shelters. To further support shelters in crisis throughout the nation, additional funding is being made available to shelters who can help others by transporting large and senior dogs and adult cats into their facilities. Shelters with higher adoption rates and the available kennel space are encouraged to support those who are struggling by accepting pets from other partner shelters. From Aug. 23 – 29, participating shelters with successful adoption events will receive grants for each pet they transport into their shelter and place into the empty the shelters adoption event. "Our nation's animal shelters are struggling in the face of overcrowding, which makes Bissell Pet Foundation's empty the shelters events an even more critical tool to ensure our shelter partners can find loving families for the pets who so often get overlooked," Founder of Bissell Pet Foundation Cathy Bissell said. "Shelters are being faced with tough decisions, such as euthanizing healthy, wonderful pets. We hope this event and the facilitated animal transports can provide some much-needed relief for shelters in dire need of support." For more information, visit Bissell or Furkids.
