Mount Sinai South Nassau Names New President

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — For the first time in its 93-year history, Mount Sinai South Nassau will have a physician leader running the hospital. Dr. Adhi Sharma, an experienced emergency medicine physician, will become the Oceanside hospital's president starting on September 1. Sharma helped lead the hospital's COVID-19 response as chief medical officer. He succeeds Richard J. Murphy, who is retiring at the end of 2021 after nine years serving as the hospital's president and CEO. Murphy spent more than four decades with leadership roles in the health care industry, South Nassau said in a news release. Under Sharma's guidance during the pandemic, the hospital surged capacity to 500 beds as it cared for more than 4,890 COVID-19 patients. "It is with great humility and appreciation for the dedicated clinical and support staff at the hospital, that I have accepted the role as president for Mount Sinai South Nassau," Sharma said in a statement. "The hospital is one of the leading facilities on Long Island, and its relationship with the Mount Sinai Health System has only enhanced its standing within the communities it serves." The outgoing Murphy spearheaded the hospital's $400 million capital plan that will transform its Oceanside and Long Beach campuses. "I can think of no one better prepared to lead Mount Sinai South Nassau than Dr. Sharma. He has been my clinical partner and became well known as a leader in the community during the pandemic," Murphy said. "I am turning the keys over to very capable hands."
