MEDFORD, MA — Longtime Medford city councilor Michael Marks will not run for re-election this year. Marks was first elected to the City Council 20 years ago after serving six years on the School Committee. "For almost three decades, you have honored me with your trust," Marks said in a statement Monday. "Conversations with you and being your Council voice on so many issues ranging from the condition of streets, infrastructure to tax rates have made up the fabric of my daily life. I have never taken your trust for granted. I accepted it as a solemn duty." Marks thanked the public, as well as his colleagues on the City Council. He said he is "at peace" with his decision to leave public office and is excited about what the future holds. "To the people of Medford, I want to express my deepest appreciation for the faith you have shown in me. It truly has been an honor. Please accept also the gratitude of the Marks family for the privilege of serving your family over these many years," he added. "To my colleagues in public service, both elected and appointed, it has been a pleasure to collaborate with you for the betterment of the city we call home. There have been times that we disagreed on issues, but we never disagreed on our desire to work for a better Medford." "My friends, this is not goodbye…it is 'until we meet again,'" Marks said.
