MERIDEN, CT — A man has been charged with insurance fraud in Meriden for falsely reporting that his stump grinder had been stolen, according to police. Yusef Chater, 39, was charged with first-degree larceny, insurance fraud, interfering with police, and second-degree falsely reporting an incident. Police said that Chater reported his stump grinder had been stolen Sept. 7, 2020, from an address in Meriden. Seymour police contacted Meriden police June 16 and reported that they found the stolen stump grinder when it was taken in for service at a local dealership. Police investigation found that Chater sold the stump grinder on Facebook Marketplace and falsely reported it stolen, according to police. He then submitted an insurance claim and obtained a replacement stump grinder. Police obtained a warrant for Chater's arrest and he turned himself Aug. 3. Chater was released on a $25,000 bond.
