Fosters Needed For Lemont Animal Rescue

LEMONT, IL — Ruby Whiskers Animal Rescue in Lemont is in need of people who are willing to foster a dog or a cat through the shelter. "The biggest challenge [for the shelter] is finding foster homes," founder and executive director Kim Arias told Patch. Arias and co-founder Violet Vrsek started Ruby Whiskers Animal rescue earlier this year. The nonprofit is volunteer-run and supported by foster families and sponsors, according to the rescue's website. In October 2019, Arias' own cat went missing for eight days before returning home safely. After the ordeal, Arias said she knew she wanted to help people who have lost a pet. She began to help look for lost pets in the Lemont area and started volunteering with other animal rescue organizations. Arias and Violet first worked together when they had to trap a pregnant cat, and their shared passion for animals led them to create Ruby Whiskers, Arias said. The rescue launched at the beginning of 2021 and received its license in April, Arias told Patch. She said the rescue has adopted out 10 cats already and has just started to work with dogs. "We can't do anything for these animals unless we can give them a home," Arias said, adding that fostering can be a difficult job. "A foster's job is to train to the best of their ability, to show [an animal] how it's supposed to behave in a home environment, and figure out its best environment," Arias said. Arias said the rescue tries to place animals accordingly while considering an animal's needs, and everyone in the household must be in agreement about fostering.
