Description
Explore San Leandro with our "Then & Now" self-guided tour and historical photographs. We are excited to present our 2021 fundraiser-- a self-drive and/or walking tour to discover new and old San Leandro! Self-Drive Then & Now: We created the self-drive tour of historic buildings or sites all over San Leandro by linking sites to history information and historical photographs. You drive to a site on the map we will provide, park, and use your cell phone and the QR codes on the map to link to history and historical photographs of the site. Downtown History Walk: This walking tour was created by the City of San Leandro and San Leandro Unifited School District students. A brochure with a map and QR codes links to history information and videos of historic sites that are mostly around or within a few blocks of San Leandro Plaza. When: You may do these tours any time that suits your convenience. But we encourage you to do the tour on September 25 between 10:00 and 4:00, when will be available at the Historic Little Brown Church, 384 W. Estudillo Avenue. During this time, there will be door prizes, auction items, water, a restroom, and answers to your questions. The brochures will provide maps and basic information for each site, enriched by the history, photographs, and videos linked to the QR codes. We expect to mail or email the brochures with maps approximately September 20, or they can be picked up on September 25 between 10:00 and 4:00 at the Little Brown Church, 384 W. Estudillo Avenue. We want everyone to be able to participate in this event--and we need to raise funds for our continued operation. Please choose your price, and give as much as you can! You will be supporting future events to build awareness and appreciation of the history of our unique and diverse city. Registration for the downtown walking tour is free. Registration for the driving tour is $10 and automatically includes the Downtown History Walk. Please consider a $25, $100, $250, or $500 sponsorship. The more you give, the more local history events we can offer. We would like to create a historic homes tour for 2022--help us achieve this goal! Would you or your business like to donate an item or service to the auction? Are you interested in becoming a major sponsor at $1,000 or more, who will be listed immediately on our website? Please call Cindy Simons, 510-910-3215, or email [email protected]. Cattle round-ups, squatters, Cherry festivals, Holy Ghost festivals, oyster pirates, Best tractors, Portuguese -- the many threads of San Leandro's past have woven a rich historical tapestry underlying the modern city of San Leandro. These 15 square miles between San Francisco Bay and the East Bay hills have been an Ohlone village, a Spanish rancho, a small farm town, the Portuguese capital of the West, an industrial center, and a major metropolitan suburb as a succession of new people has transformed the area. The volunteers of the San Leandro Historical Society are committed to preserving and celebrating the stories and structures of our diverse community. The Little Brown Church, built as the First Presbyterian Church in 1867, is the home of the San Leandro Historical Society. The sanctuary of the church was dismantled in the 1930s, but the Sunday school addition (added to the church around 1890) remained on Clarke Street. In the 1970s, the Historical Society acquired the old building that had once been the Sunday school and moved it down the street to save it from being razed for development. Now behind the Casa Peralta, it adds a third piece to the downtown history complex formed by the city-owned Casa Peralta and San Leandro History Museum, and the Historical Society-owned Little Brown Church.
