Description
Model Minority‘s Patriotism - the story behind an Asian American elected official who spoke out against hate At the Midwest USA Chinese Chamber of Commerce (“Chamber”), we seek to promote trade and investment between the U.S. and China, advocate a strong & fair business environment, provide support services, expertise, and networking opportunities to both local and global businesses. Our Chamber proudly serves the community as an advocate for diversity & inclusion in local businesses, community initiatives and government affairs. As this country, and the City of Pittsburgh, continue to battle and address the impact of the sharp increase of racism and hate, our Chamber was up front in this battle, with the focus on addressing the anti-Asian hate. We are planning to host an event named “Model Minority‘s Patriotism - the story behind an Asian American elected official who spoke out against hate” on August 30, 2021, between 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm, at McCormick & Schmick's Restaurant in Pittsburgh downtown. The event would include the presentation of Mr. Lee Wong, followed by a networking happy hour for those attendees. It will be a private event, as McCormick & Schmick will be closed for other guests. We wish to provide people with the opportunity to hear first hand the experience of Asian Americans and to discuss the Asian identity and the anti-AAPI hate. We are very fortunate that Mr. Wong has agreed to join and speak out for our August 30 event. Mr. Wong, is an elected official and Chairman of the board of trustees in West Chester Township, Ohio, and also the Chairman of the Board of our Chamber. During a meeting of the West Chester Township Board of Trustees on March 23rd, he stood up and literally bared his chest to make a point about the discrimination and hate that Asian Americans have experienced, and how the patriotism got questions simply because of his Asian face. That moment was caught on video and went viral. His act of patriotism brought awareness of anti Asian hate in the community to the public and the video was echoed by many, including AAPI and veterans and inspired a series of discussions on racism against Asians and how our nation can reconcile and move forward. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in sponsoring this event.
