SANDY HOOK, CT—Sandy Hook resident and Immaculate High School Class of 2022 Senior Kevin Coonan has won a Halo award for his role as Galileo in "We Will Rock You". Despite unique circumstances with no live audience to perform in front of, Immaculate High School's theater students met the challenge head-on and landed on their feet with four wins at the 18th Annual Seven Angels Theatre Halo Awards. The winners of the 2021 Halo Awards are as follows: Best Musical - "We Will Rock You"Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical - Kevin Coonan '22 for his role as Galileo in "We Will Rock You"Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical - Abby Giansiracusa '21 for her role as Scaramouche in "We Will Rock You"Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play - Nicole Kolitsas '21 for her role as Medea in "Medea" Musical Director and choral music teacher Jen Doherty said of the students, "You inspire with me with your songs, with your dancing, and with your dedication and that is a gift to the whole Immaculate community." Director Matt Farina said, "You created something that is very special. I'm so proud of you." Producer and English teacher Kathleen Czel said, "Congratulations to the Immaculate High School cast of 'We Will Rock You' and good luck to our graduating seniors. We are so proud of you." "Medea" Director and English teacher Alexa Wild said, "Congratulations to the cast and crew of Immaculate High School's 'Medea.' You guys did an excellent job in this tough time. It was really difficult. And doing it by Zoom was not ideal but you guys rocked it. Thank you so much."The 18th Annual Halo Awards event was held on July 9, 2021. Click here to view. The awards celebrate the best in high school theatre and recognize actors in numerous categories including Best Actor and Actress in a Musical/Play, Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical/Play, Best Performance by the Cast in an Ensemble Production, Best Comic Actor and Actress in a Musical/Play, Best Student Choreographer, plus categories for lighting, design, stage management, special effects, and many more. In 2021, over 81 high schools from across the state of Connecticut participated with judges attending over a hundred performances throughout the year.In addition to the Halo Awards that were received by IHS's students, Nicole Kolitsas won the 2021 Stephen Sondheim Award for Best Actress for her role as Killer Queen in "We Will Rock You."
