CONCORD, NH — The chaos in Afghanistan is dominating the weekend headlines as a nearly 20-year war appears to be coming to some sort of end — and certainly not the way anyone wanted or expected. The president has fled the country and the Taliban has moved into Kabul and taken over most of the provinces of the country. U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) issued a statement on Sunday saying the situation was "the result of failures by multiple administrations" which did not make decisions based on "facts on the ground" and instead, "arbitrary deadlines." She called on the Biden administration to ensure there was a plan in place to protect Americans in the country as well as the safety of Afghan women and girls. "We also need to determine what intelligence failures led to underestimating the ease and speed of the Taliban's advancement and work to ensure that we prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for terrorists," she added. Hassan traveled to the country in 2019 as part of a Congressional fact-finding mission. It is stunning and sad how quickly the Afghani government collapsed despite years of training by allied forces and hundreds of billions of dollars of weaponry — now in the hands of some very evil people. One issue seemingly lost is the fact that the original mission of invading Afghanistan was to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice for the Sept. 11 attacks, which killed thousands of Americans. That occurred more than a decade ago … in Pakistan. Fiery Crash In Hopkinton I-89 South was closed for a bit this morning for a fiery rollover crash.
