Please join us for all or part of the Summer Celebration from August 27th – 29th. Virtual Talks on August 27th from 6-8 pm, and on August 28th from 2-4 pm (see attached for class details). Please RSVP to attend the Sunday MG event SUMMER CELEBRATION Sponsored by the Lane Country Master Gardener Association Virtual Talks Friday, August 27 6:00pm - 7:00pm Title: Incorporating Native Plants into your Urban (or Semi-Urban) Garden Description: Explore how native plants can help you meet your gardening objectives while building community resilience, adapting to climate change, and supporting pollinators and other species that are a vital part of our fragile ecological systems. Learn the basics about native plants, why they are important, and why people should not be shy about seeking them out as a part of their garden plant palette. Speaker Bio: Susie Smith is a long-time gardener in Eugene, Oregon, and became a Lane County Master Gardener in 2012. Smith’s professional career has focused on water and energy resources and public infrastructure, with over 35 years of experience working for local governments in Oregon. 7:00pm - 7:30pm Title: What to Plant For Fall/Winter Harvest: Description: This seminar will provide some tips on how to have a successful fall and winter garden, crop and varietal selection, and season extension techniques. Speaker Bio: Erica Chernoh is an Assistant Professor of Practice with OSU Extension in Lane County where she works with commercial tree crop and berry producers, and oversees the Master Gardener program. Erica has over 20 years of experience working in the horticulture and organic agriculture industry. 7:30pm - 8:00pm Title: Best Tools to Use in your Garden Description: This talk will show examples of some of the best garden tools and tips for keeping them sharp and clean. Speaker Bio: Mike Peters, as he was growing up, found that he always gravitated toward natural areas and fell in love with landscaping and gardening. He now owns and operates Sustain O Scapes, a regenerative ecological landscaping company that brings civilization and nature together in a way that benefits both. He is a member of the Willamette Valley Regenerative Landscape Coalition and a collector of unique edible and medicinal plants and perennial vegetables and the useful tools that bring them to life. August 27 from 6-8 pm Register: Saturday, August 28 2:00pm - 3:00pm Title: Care-Free Fruit and Cover Crops Description: How to grow fruit without sprays and with minimal pest damage. Varieties, protective strategies, and planting tips. Cover crops. What and when to plant. Speaker Bio: John Fischer does the ‘Good Gardening’ segment on KLCC’s gardening program. He has been growing a garden and fruit for a long, long time and has been a Master Gardener for many years. 3:00pm - 3:30pm Title: Food Preservation is a Science and Not a Creative Art Seminar Description: Being creative when home canning can be very dangerous if you don’t follow research based tested methods. Botulism poisoning is the most dangerous form of food poisoning and improperly home canned foods are often the source. Learn what you can and cannot do when canning to assure that your products are safe. Learn why grandma’s recipes might not be safe today and where you can find research-based information for home food preservation. Will also include some tips and tricks learned over the years to help you be successful preserving your own foods. Speaker Bio: Nellie Oehler is an Extension Family Consumer Science Educator for the OSU Extension Service in Lane County. She has a long career with OSU Extension spanning over 50 years. Nellie started Oregon’s first Master Food Preserver Program in 1980 and has coordinated the Lane County Program since 1981. She also keeps the state MFP Resource Notebook up to date and has trained hundreds of Master Food Preserver Volunteers and Staff over the years. Besides her role as an Extension Educator she is a 4-H leader and a Master Gardener in Benton County. Lives on a small farm and grows and preserves food for her family. 3:30pm - 4:00pm Title: Plant Propagation for the Backyard Gardener Seminar Description: This seminar takes a quick look into the basic techniques and the various types of plants that can be successfully propagated by the home gardener. A brief overview of needed equipment, basic techniques, and seasonal timing will be shared. Helpful educational resource sites will also be shared. Speaker Bio: Shirley Betournay has been a MG since 2012, and now serves on many committees within the Lane County Master Gardener Association. One of her specialties is to teach and guide the plant propagation program. Master Gardeners establish “mother plants”, and then propagate hundreds of plants for the Association’s annual plant sale.
