Description

Two Americana powerhouses perform at The Back Room. Have you ever been walking down the street, and suddenly heard a voice that made you walk into a venue to see whose it was? That is Jimbo Scott’s voice - a bell, magnetic and the definition of a powerhouse. A favorite in the Bay Area’s esteemed house concert scene and folk venues, and a member of the famed California jamgrass band, Poor Man’s Whiskey, Jimbo Scott’s music evokes traditions of Tennessee country and bluegrass, Oakland soul and sepia toned California landscapes and life-scapes. Described by Tahoe Weekly as “Honest Honey-Eyed Americana,” Jimbo’s music casts reflections around the room, flashing from honest self-deprecation to cinematic retrospectives on our part in shaping our communities and accounting the consequences of our actions and inactions. His signature baritone voice has moved many an audience including The Kate Wolf Music Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and the Fillmore. With Poor Man’s Whiskey announcing a hiatus at the end of 2019, Jimbo is seizing on the momentum of his time with the band and invites the loyal PMW fanbase as well as folk and Americana fans far and wide to enjoy his own musical contributions. Late for the Train is an indie-folk string trio rooted in American folk and bluegrass music. Infused with the honest depth of the coastal redwood forests and the heartfelt community of the North Bay, the band provides a playful and poignant musical experience that uplifts the spirit and rouses the soul. Travel back to a time of hearthside storytelling with these California natives, reveling in the rich traditions of Americana, bluegrass, folk, and Celtic music. Their dynamic songwriting is inspired by influences such as Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Mandolin Orange, Mipso, and Nickel Creek. The ensemble consists of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists David Pascoe (guitar/mandolin), Laura Benson (fiddle), and Thom Beneduci (stand-up bass). The trio's skillful craftsmanship meets tender harmonies and potent lyrics that grapple with all the wonder, contradiction, and truth of living in the modern age. Their debut album, Plant It or Build It, was released on September 4th, 2020. A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE BACK ROOM Thank you for your interest in this show. To stay in the loop about our future shows, please join our mailing list here. This show is part of our outdoor concert series, which is very different in atmosphere and logistics from our indoor shows. We are now all experiencing the welcome dismantling of the COVID restrictions that we have lived with for so long. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that, even though the indoors once again beckons, the outdoors has not lost its’ fascination to Back Room audiences - and performers. After all, summer is here! And an indoor show might (depending on a number of factors) means masks, whereas the outdoors is now (maybe, possibly, at your discretion) gloriously mask-free! So, we will continue to feature outdoor music through the summer, and maybe even beyond. We will continue to socially distance our seats, but you may rearrange them to your liking. And those seats will be standard folding chairs - no comfy couches outside, but they will be comfortably shaded. Only 60 tickets will be sold, and we expect all or most of them to be bought in advance. (Reimbursement for cancellation is guaranteed with 24-hour notice, and rain may cause a cancellation from our end). If a show is sold out, you may contact Sam via email ([email protected]) for permission to bring your own seats (and be charged at the "door" instead of in advance). Please keep in mind that late afternoons can be chillier than expected, even on a warm spring day, especially when sitting still, so bring an extra layer! Cups of water will be available, but it might be a good idea to bring your own drinks/snacks. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING LIVE MUSIC! Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Children under 12 are free. We strongly encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance, which are available at the link below, or you may pay at the door the day of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby). The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-381-1997. Local musician Sam Rudin recently opened a new music venue in downtown Berkeley called The Back Room, which honors his vision to recreate the cozy ambience of the original Freight & Salvage. Rudin describes his new venture as a small space (100 people max), with great acoustics and comfortable seating, that showcases the musicians with respect and appreciation.
