What is Brazilian Day & Lavagem?
A celebration of Brazilian Independence Day and a cleansing of energies!
The festivities unfold in west Berkeley with a procession of devotees dressed in white accompanied by drumming and culminating in a blessing given by children from the local community. There follows a cultural block party with live music, dance performances, brazilian & international food & drinks, and local artisanal vendors. More About Lavagem do Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (patron saint of Bahia):
Celebrated on the second Thursday of the year, the traditional washing of Bonfim’s staircases is considered the second largest popular manifestation in Bahia, only behind Carnaval.
Thousands of faithful members gather in the Lower City, in Salvador, to participate in masses and in one of the largest religious walks in the state, which takes place between the Church of Our Lady of Conceição da Praia, in Comércio, and the Sacred Hill, in Bonfim. The Lavagem do Bonfim is a clear example of religious syncretism, as Afro Brazilian Candomblé priestess and devotees are in charge of blessing the Catholic Church in the name of the Orixá Oxalá/Obatalá.
