St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. It was started in 1999 with the idea to shave heads on St. Patrick’s day to raise money for children with cancer, and thus St. Baldrick’s was born! Why is this necessary? Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget is dedicated purely to studying childhood cancer. In the past 20 years, only three new drugs had been approved that were specifically developed to treat children with cancer—until this summer! What does St. Baldrick’s actually do? How can I see their impact? St. Baldrick’s provides research grants to scientists around the world who have \dedicated their lives to searching for treatments for childhood cancer. Thanks to research that St. Baldrick’s helped fund, the FDA recently approved the first gene therapy in the US for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow and the most common form of childhood cancer. How prevalent is childhood cancer? Worldwide, 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year—that’s one child every two minutes. On average, children lose 71 years of life to cancer, as compared to 15 years in adults.
