Happy National Back To School Prep Day, Today I have news about a lawsuit over pistol permits, school board members crossing party lines, businesses responding to the mask mandate, and the chief of police's agenda. All that, events, and more below. Today's weather, 8/15: Rain starting in the afternoon. High: 87 Low: 75. Here are the top stories in Raleigh today: The Wake County sheriff has agreed to a settlement of over $26,000 in the lawsuit over the speed of processing pistol permits in the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. After temporarily suspending new pistol permits as a result of the volume of applications, multiple lawsuits were filed. Per state policy the applications should be processed within 14 days, however the office was often taking more than two months to process the applications. Ultimately, Sheriff Gerald Baker agreed to settle in order to avoid heavy legal expenses, and was not found to have violated any constitutional or statutory rights. The office must continue accepting permit applications according to the law. (CBS17)Wake County Republican Party leaders are looking to potentially censure two GOP school board members who voted in favor of a mask mandate in county schools. Party vice chair Mark Cavaliero told board members Karen Carter and Roxie Cash that many party members are "disappointed and angry, and are calling to issue a formal censure in the matter." Carter told WRAL that the vote was "about keeping students in schools and in their classrooms to learn, thrive, and socialize" and stated that her votes are "guided by what is best for our students, never by what a political party or special interest group demands." (WRAL)Education advocates are calling for greater state spending after the House of Representatives voted in favor of its proposed spending plan on Thursday. The budget does include raises for teachers however it is not in compliance with the ruling passed down in the Leandro V. NC case. Although the pay raise is the largest in recent history, the staffing shortages are centuries old. In order to get NC schools to where advocates want them to be, the State would need to delegate more money to take care of the backlogs of shortages. Another issue schools face is greater vacancies in rural education systems, with some counties seeing up to 13.1% vacancy. (WNCT9)The response to the mask mandate that went into effect on Friday night is mixed. Some business owners anticipated the mask mandate as other counties began implementing their own. The owner of DeMo's Pizza shop in downtown prepared by buying hundreds of masks in anticipation of the decision and said he would rather have a mask mandate than another round of shutdowns. (CBS17) On the other hand, some business owners believe that Raleigh bars and restaurants will lose business to areas with no mask requirements. Gym owners are especially concerned about the impact the mask mandate will have on them. (WRAL)Police Chief Estella Patterson has a list of things she wants to accomplish in taking office. One thing she is particularly passionate about is regaining the public's trust. Her first priority is ensuring that all officers are well-trained and understand the law. She emphasized officers' knowledge of a peaceful right to protest and believes that community transparency is important to her success. In the coming weeks she intends to meet with more officers and members of the community to gauge where she needs to make changes for Raleigh.
