Description
Join us for a discussion on creating gardens and landscapes that are aligned with our local climate and use water efficiently. We are currently experiencing the driest times in recorded history for the Yampa Valley. Now more than ever, we need to be making smart decisions with the way we use our water. One important way that we can adapt to drier conditions is to ensure that our gardens and landscapes are aligned with our local climate and use water efficiently. Join us on Thursday, August 26, from 5:30-7:15 p.m. at Colorado Mountain College’s Albright Family Auditorium, and Bear Park Permaculture Center for a free workshop on water conservation practices and principles for gardens and landscaping. The workshop will feature a presentation from Western Water Management, and will focus on techniques for watering your landscape efficiently, ways to be water conscious in your landscaping and design, and will equip you with technical expertise for managing your water on your landscape. After the presentation, the workshop will move to the permaculture center, Bear Park, to hear a panel discussion and Q&A from a landscape and native plant specialist, CSU Extension, and a local permaculture expert. This panel will focus on Yampa Valley climate-appropriate plants, landscaping construction and design, permaculture, native landscaping, and low-water-use tips for your garden. Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is fighting climate change locally by making life in the Yampa Valley more sustainable for residents and visitors alike. We’re a nonprofit organization that’s like the hub of a wheel, connecting with, engaging and supporting businesses, schools, individuals, local governments and events in the effort to conserve resources and reduce our community’s carbon footprint. YVSC is making the places we live, learn, work and play more sustainable through a diverse array of program offerings: Our Waste Diversion program encompasses Sustainable Events, Recycling and new Food Waste initiatives, which are reducing household food waste and rescuing surplus food from restaurants; the Sustainable Schools program is creating a culture of sustainability in schools through waste diversion, energy efficiency and tree-planting projects; Talking Green is a monthly adult education series on various environmental topics; the Green Building program educates the building community and residents about building and remodeling sustainably; the Energy program encourages energy conservation and renewable energy; and ReTree Steamboat connects the local community, especially youth, to their forest and environment. www.yvsc.org
