Description

A walking tour of gangster stories in the Chicago loop - Capone and beyond - from Mysterious Chicago and Effing Chicago Tours. Gangsters of the Loop is an incredibly fascinating, informative, and entertaining gangster tour, covering the 1870s to the 1960s (with an emphasis on the prohibition era, naturally). We'll show you where Capone can REALLY be traced in the loop, along with stories about Terrible Tommy O'Connor, Bugs Moran, Vinnie "The Schemer" Drucci, as well as tales of the swindler and gambler scenes that evolved into the prohibition-era gangs. Al Capone didn't throw nearly as many parties in the loop as people claim - but he did buy his underwear there. Join us for a walking tour based on serious research into the real history of Chicago's gangland past, not just the urban legends! This tour will feature just about every extant downtown building to which he can -really- be traced. Our guide for this adventure, Adam Selzer, has been writing articles and books on Chicago history for years, including one on Chicago mobs that's available at several tourist traps (written under another name), as well as such books as HH Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil, The Ghosts of Chicago, and Mysterious Chicago. He's on the History Channel and the Travel Channel all the time. The roughly 75 min tour begins near Millennium Park and ends fairly near the starting point. This tour is presented with Effing Chicago, a collective of tour guides behaving badly. This means there may be some swearing, and the guide isn't obligated to wear a costume! WHAT TO KNOW  Meet outside the Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph. It's very close to several L stops, as well as the Millennium Park metra station. There are lots of garages and parking lots nearby - we suggest the SpotHero app. There may be some high curbs and stairs along the route, so ADA access has the usual "streets of Chicago" limitations. The route may vary based on construction, etc, but we figure on 1.5 miles walking. The tour runs rain or shine, but may be rescheduled for really dangerous weather. Bathroom access will be very limited, this being an outdoor downtown tour. The tour is almost all in the safe outdoors, but we -strongly- request that patrons be fully vaxxed against Covid 19 (really, we hope you have all your shots!). If you have questions about the vaccines, the Mayo Clinic has an excellent page to answer them.
