Join us for the prescreening party of Kinji Fukasaku's 1973 cult classic Battles without Honor and Humanity and special Yakuza Papers Party! Join the Japanese Arts Foundation and Culture Center of Chicago for Japan Week at Logan Theatre from 9/8 through 9/15! We have two huge events to celebrate this collaboration, starting with the opening night on Wednesday, September 8th screening Kinji Fukasaku’s 1973 cult classic Battles Without Honor and Humanity, also known as The Yakuza Papers. Tickets for this film can be purchased directly from the Logan Theatre. Event Schedule 8:00pm 21+ Yakuza Paper Party 9:30pm Talk Battles without Honor and Humanity Screening 10:30pmQ&A with speakers after filmYakuza Papers Party Opening night includes a talk with SAIC, Film, New Media, and Video Professor Tatsu Aoki and Lee Ferdinand, Faculty of the Computer and Digital Media at DePaul University and Cinema and Television Arts department at Columbia University. These special guests were among the production team at Home Vision Entertainment that created the US box sets and DVD releases of this iconic series. Aoki and Ferdinand will give a brief history of the Japanese film industry, and a deep dive into the genre of yakuza films from their amazing experiences! The night is accompanied by a Suntory Toki highballs, a Yakuza Papers photobooth, and also features a limited edition artwork for purchase created by Chicago artist Derrick Fields of the Japanese Arts Foundation and Assistant Professor at Northwestern University University’s department of Radio, TV, and Film. The Japanese Arts Foundation is also selling raffle tickets ($5 each or 4 for $15) that will be drawn at the Lost in Translation event on Friday, September 10th! Prizes include artwork from master calligrapher Hekiun Oda, Suntory products, and more! All artwork and raffle ticket sales go directly to the Japanese Arts Foundation. You do not need to be present to win! Japan Week is a fundraiser for the Japanese Arts Foundation and Culture Center as we transition out of partial closure from the COVID-19 pandemic. We are thrilled to offer programs to the Chicago community once more with all of your support! Attendees will adhere to government COVID-19 guidelines; all staff will be masked.
