Description
Schoolyard Habitat and NGSS Skill Building Workshop Learn to create schoolyard habitats and tools to use NGSS Science and Engineering Practices in the School Garden. We will discuss: habitat creation and restorationplant selectionsite preperationschool wide managementNGSS science practicesobservations through investigationscollecting and communicating informationconstructing explanationsdesigning solutions for real world problem solvingPollinators are essential to our environment. The ecological service they provide is necessary for the reproduction of over 85% of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s crop species. Unfortunately, in many places, the essential service of pollination is at risk from habitat loss, pesticide use, and introduced diseases. Join Xerces staff members Maddy Kangas and Deedee Soto as they give a broad overview of the current status of monarchs and other pollinators. Learn how school gardens can play an important role in providing habitat for pollinators as we discuss habitat creation/restoration, plant selection, site prep, and management. Find out how you can help pollinators and other invertebrates through community science efforts! In addition, learn how to use a school pollinator garden ecosystem for your students to engage and communicate as scientists. Through modeling participants will engage in NGSS science practices making observations through investigations, collecting and communicating information, modeling, and constructing explanations and designing solutions using the workshop site garden. Participants will further learn about various NGSS tools and environmental education resources for exploring school garden opportunities across grade bands. This workshop is hosted in partnership with Gold Ridge RCD. The Mission of the Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District is to work in partnership their community to conserve and protect the natural resources on which we all depend. Our mission at the School Garden Network is to grow healthy students, families, schools, and communities through garden-based education.
