BRONX, NY — A teenage boy died on Thursday after being struck by lightning at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, police said.
A group of seven people were on the beach at around 5:19 p.m. Thursday when a bolt of lightning struck them, police said.
All seven people — two girls ages 12 and 13, two boys ages 13 and 14, a 33-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man — were rushed to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi.
The 13-year-old boy, identified as Bronx resident Carlos Ramos, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The other victims were in stable condition, police said.
Beachgoers told ABC7 that the storm rolled in suddenly, followed quickly by lightning. The Parks Department said it made announcements over a public address system, telling people to clear the beach.
The storm came at the end of a sweltering day in New York City, where the heat index surged above 100 degrees. A heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday.
