BROOKLINE, MA — A Chestnut Hill resident and member of The Country Club in Brookline has won the 2021 Massachusetts Women's Amateur Championship at Plymouth Country Club.
Katie Schernecker defeated Shannon Johnson, 5&4, in the 18-hole final match with seven birdies and just 50 strokes over 14 holes. This is Schernecker's first individual Massachusetts State amateur title.
"This is a big one," said Schreckner in an interview after the game. "This is probably my favorite event of the year. I've been playing in it for the past five years, and match play is such a fun format, but the format this year I think was great. It's awesome to see how much the field has filled out. There are so many great competitors. Just having everyone in one place being able to play at an amazing course as always is really fun."
Schreckner, who graduated from Winsor High School and started a club golf team there, is the daughter of the Director of Golf at Harvard University and will play on the Women's Golf Team at Harvard University this fall.
"This is my last tournament of the summer, so it's really awesome to go out here, especially feeling like I really played my best today," she said in the interview. "It's great for confidence. I'm ready for a lot more competition, so hopefully, I'll be traveling a lot and competing a lot as well."
