PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, MD — Prince George's County Public Schools reopened applications for online classes on Wednesday. Hybrid schooling is not available this year. Leaders attributed the new application period to the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of coronavirus. The school system cannot guarantee virtual instruction for all applicants, however. "Adding students will depend on hiring additional staff, which may be challenging so close to the start of the new school year," officials said in a newsletter. "PGCPS will make every effort to accommodate as many students as possible. However, if there is no space available in the programs, students will be expected to attend classes in person." Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade Students in kindergarten through sixth grade can apply to the Virtual Learning Program. The initiative will end when the coronavirus vaccine is available to students younger than 12. The Virtual Learning Program application will be open at this link until Aug. 20 at 11:59 p.m. This application guarantees a spot on a waitlist. Families will hear back by Aug. 30. Grades Seven Through 12 A limited number of seats are still available at the Online Campus for students in grades seven through 12. This option is for Prince Georgians who want to enroll in permanent distance learning and forego all specialty programs and charter schools. Online Campus applications are posted here. They are due Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. Students will get a response by Aug. 24. In-Person Classes Masks will be required for all in-person students and staff regardless of immunization status. Classes start Sept. 8. To see the full schedule, read Patch's school calendar story. Subscribe to your local Patch newsletter. Download our mobile application from the App Store or Google Play.
