BALTIMORE, MD — After 11 years as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, slugger Chris Davis announced he was hanging up his helmet for good. Davis, 35, decided to retire Thursday after what he called an "extended time dealing with my injury and recent hip surgery." The first baseman, nicknamed "Crush Davis," has been out for much of this year. He needed to have surgery on the labrum in his left hip in May, according to the Associated Press, which reported Davis has not played since spring training in February. His $161 million contract was set to expire in 2022, the AP reported. Davis, 35, joined the Orioles in 2011 after starting his major league career with the Texas Rangers in 2008. He retires with 295 home runs to his name, according to Major League Baseball. He thanked the Orioles and Birdland "for the many memories that I will cherish forever." After Davis announced his retirement, the team issued a statement of gratitude. "The Orioles support Chris Davis as he retires from baseball today," the Orioles' statement said. "Athletes have the power to change lives and better their communities, and Chris and his family have done just that," the statement said. "For every inning played and home run hit, hour of service completed and amount donated, the Davis family has made an immeasurable impact on our city and on Orioles baseball."
