NEWARK, NJ — After being canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Free Comic Book Day is back for 2021. And a local comic shop in Newark plans to join the festivities.
According to the locator at freecomicbookday.com, Fortress of Solitude in Newark will be among the stores across the U.S. participating on Saturday, Aug. 14.
Fortress of Solitude is located at 53 University Avenue. Learn more about this local business here.
Normally held on the first Saturday in May, this year's Free Comic Book Day marks the 20th anniversary of the now-ubiquitous event, which strives to raise awareness about the medium and bring new fans into the fold.
A committee of comic shop retailers chose 50 titles to be available on Free Comic Book Day: 12 Gold Sponsor comics and 38 Silver Sponsor comics. See the full list here.
"Every year, we strive to bring fans a memorable Free Comic Book Day experience, and with this year being our 20th anniversary, we hope it will be the best yet," spokesperson Ashton Greenwood said.
"The variety of this year's comic book selection is really exciting," Greenwood added. "There's something for every kind of fan, from the long-time reader to the comic book-curious. We know comic book retailers are looking forward to treating everyone to a day of fun and discovery, so we hope fans will be able to safely visit their comic shops to celebrate."
