SANTA CRUZ, CA — A Santa Cruz house fire reported early Friday morning displaced four people, left one person injured and resulted in $220,000 of damage. The Santa Cruz Fire Department learned of a fire at single-family home in the 220 block of Pearl Street around 2 a.m. All four residents exited on their own and one person suffered minor burns. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire in the back of the home, where significant damage occurred in the kitchen, deck and an add-on room. A fence was destroyed, as was a backyard shed in a neighbor's house, firefighters said. Another neighbor's home was damaged by the heat. Firefighters said they controlled the blaze within about 25 minutes and prevented another $655,000 in damage. They remained at the home for another four hours until the fire was fully extinguished. Firefighters remind residents to ensure smoke detectors are installed and property working. Change batteries when you change your clocks.
