Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Mayor Steinberg sent a letter to city manager Howard Chan calling for vaccination of all City of Sacramento new hires effective immediately. The mayor acknowledged that issuing such a mandate for the existing unionized workforce would have to go through the labor representatives, but urged Chan to work with the City Attorney's Office and Labor Relations team to require all new hires at the City of Sacramento be fully vaccinated. (CBS Sacramento) Restaurant prices in Sacramento are on the rise, and the reasons are not going away any time soon. Chefs and restaurant owners in Sacramento site the rising cost of labor as one factor driving their menu prices up. They also say that meat prices are on the rise, some more than doubling, due to the impacts of the coronavirus on the meat packing plants in the Eastern US. They also say that proposition 12, which regulates the amount of space that hogs have to live, will further exacerbate the situation. They are absorbing as much of the increases as they can, but some are making their way onto the menu. (KCRA3) Sacramento area parents are saying that they have to choose between safety and education for their school-age children. Last year, schools in Sacramento were able to offer distance learning that included advanced placement classes. This year, that is not an option. Parents need to send their kids to in-person classes or opt for independent study that does not include advanced placement curriculum. A statement from the San Juan Unified School District reads:"This year, the district's primary alternative to in-person learning is an independent study or homeschool due to new state legislation that makes offering distance learning more difficult." Parents who aren't comfortable sending their unvaccinated children to in-person classes feel there is no viable option. (KCRA3)Power was out for thousands in Elk Grove on Friday. A car left the roadway and struck a power pole, igniting a grass fire and taking down power for over 9,200 customers. Police did not provide any additional details about the crash or the condition of the driver. (FOX40)A multi-vehicle crash on I-80 blocked all westbound lanes of traffic near Madison Avenue on Friday afternoon. Traffic was backed up to Citrus Heights and beyond. Drivers were told to avoid the area if at all possible. (KCRA3) Saturday's events in Sacramento The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Sacramento County is holding a HUGE garage sale in the Walmart parking lot on Riley Street in Folsom. 100% of the proceeds go the the research, education, advocacy and services of the American Cancer Society. (10 am)Try your hand at jewelry making at the Crocker Art Museum. This class is centered around the extravagant jewelry of the Gilded Age, inspired by the fabulous holdings of Margaret Crocker. (10:30 am)Come out to the Crest Theater and meet Jesus Christ - or at least the superstar who played him on screen! Ted Neely will be on hand to introduce the film he starred in 48 years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar! (7 pm)Interested in joining the Cub Scouts? Come out and see what they are all about and watch a movie with them under the stars! (7 pm) Sacramento Patch Notebook Wow! Sacramento's having a pow wow. The 26th annual pow wow, to be exact. You'll see lots of Native American tribes represented at this event. They will show off their beautiful ceremonial garb and dance their native dances for you all weekend! Students K-12 can ride SacRT for free any day, any time! A recent study done by the University of Texas showed the many benefits of this youth-ride-free program, including an increase in school attendance. All you need is a school ID card and you're in! Stage Nine Entertainment, located in the heart of the historic district at the Old Sacramento Waterfront, will host Thomas Kinkade Studios Legacy Artist Dirk Wunderlich for a weekend of special activities on August 21-22, 2021, from noon to 6 p.m. each day. You'll experience free "Learn to Sketch" drawing workshops, plus Dirk will lead a fun and interactive contest (with prizes) that will take place each day.
