BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge Police Chief John Madden delivered his annual report to the Village Board this week. Here are seven takeaways from the report: Burr Ridge has received an average of about 19,500 calls for service annually since 2015. That works out to slightly more than 50 a day. The total annual number dropped to 12,105 in 2020, largely because of the pandemic. Violent crime remain low in Burr Ridge, remaining in the single digits annually the last few years. Property crimes have decreased over the last three years. In 2019, the last non-pandemic year, the number was 160.The police department had no workplace transmissions of the coronavirus. Two officers did contract COVID-19, but that was while they were away from the department. The department restructured its leadership, eliminating the rank of corporal. That saves $20,000 a year, without reducing the number of sworn officers. The department issued five perfect attendance awards for 2020. That's the most such awards in a long time. The department has been accredited with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement since 2007. Few departments have this accreditation. Trustee Tony Schiappa said when he talks to residents, they often comment on the police presence in their neighborhoods. "A new resident commented on looking at homes in areas such as Lemont, Hinsdale and Darien," he said. "They saw more police officers when looking for homes here." Mayor Gary Grasso praised the police for being on alert during last summer's riots, none of which affected Burr Ridge. "The chief had contingency plans, and everything was ready," the mayor said. "I got calls from residents and business owners when they saw squad cars at the cloverleaf intersection with lights on that weekend. That was something they commented on. They were glad to see it... It's good to see how professional the police department in Burr Ridge is."
