Peachtree Creek Bridge Restoration Could Take A Year

ATLANTA — The bridge over South Fork Peachtree Creek on Cheshire Bridge Road could take a year to rebuild, Atlanta officials said. During a meeting of the Atlanta Transportation Committee earlier this week, Transportation Commissioner Josh Rowan said a complete overhaul likely would be needed. "We are also planning for the worst, which would be a total demolition and total rebuild of the bridge," he said as he called in to the meeting. "A ballpark estimate for demolishing the bridge, designing a new bridge, and rebuilding the bridge at best is one year. And that does not account for any significant weather." On Aug. 4, Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department was called to put out a fire that started at the base of the bridge, causing severe damage and cutting into a 4-inch gas line, leading to further damage, the AJC reports. *Major Incident* Cheshire Bridge Rd is closed near Faulkner Rd in both directions due to gas main break and fire on bridge. "Georgia Department of Transportation deemed the bridge unsafe and a public hazard," Rowan told the committee. Estimates for work to replace the bridge are coming in and a final emergency design draft is expected to be ready within weeks, he said.
