UC San Diego is Hiring Temporary Food Service Workers! Compensation ranges from $17.82 -$18.64 per hour depending on experience. Benefits include Medical (only), Vacation, and Sick Accruals. Assignments typically last between 3-6 months. Full-Time and Part-Time Available. Titles include but are not limited to Food Service Workers, Lead Food Service Workers, Line cooks, Banquet Servers, and Banquet Captains. Qualifications Proven food service experience in a quality food or hospitality service operation, or institutional food service role; an equivalent combination of education in a restaurant, catering, or retail operation. Well-versed in hospitality, attention to detail, and quality control. Demonstrated skill to interact and communicate positively with other staff and customers. Ability to handle stressful situations, multiple deadlines, and difficult multi-tasking environments in a calm professional manner. Ability to set and deliver quality meal service as ordered, on time, hot and in accordance with hospital and food safety standards. Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and ability to follow through and carry out assignments. Strong mathematical, cash handling, and accounting skills to operate a cash register, accurately complete forms, and service records. Must be reliable and punctual. Applicable to Lead Food Service roles: Knowledge and skill in teaching and delegating tasks to subordinates, and effectively monitoring and evaluating their performance. Leads staff and delegates to them any or all of the following: food preparation, off-site catering, special events, customer service, deliveries sanitation, cleanliness and safety. Applicable to Cook roles: Demonstrated skills in and knowledge of institutional food production. Proven knowledge of and experience working with standardized recipes and production sheets. Solid mathematical abilities to interpret and record production data, to use proper weights and measures in recipes as well as to provide statistical data, to store data and to reconcile invoices. Skills in and knowledge of related food service functions such as safety and sanitation, production methods, and equipment maintenance. Applicable to Banquet Captain roles: Independently sets-up cold and hot food service buffets for catering events to include elaborate banquet displays, theme props and decorations. Prepares list of equipment for events; pulls equipment, polishes and stages equipment prior to event. Sets up off-site catering events to include building workstations and kitchen preparation areas. Provides formal banquet and table service according to the standards of the American Banquet Association etiquette. Duties include correct service of food, break-down of trays and service of wine and champagne. Special Conditions A background check and reference checks are required. Must have reliable transportation for commuting to work. Report to work on time. CA drivers license and DMV check will be required for some positions. Strictly follow UC San Diego COVID requirements and policies. Flexible availability for early morning, afternoon, and evening shifts (may be scheduled on weekends and/or holidays).
