Neuroscience of ADHD
Class Description: ADHD is normally explained as a list of symptoms. A more productive way of understanding ADHD is to understand how the ADHD brain processes information differently from the neurotypical brain. This brief class will use the Triune Brain theory to explain the difference between neurotypical brain processing and ADHD brain processing, and look at the neurochemicals that drive the processes. ADHD medication will be discussed briefly to show the connection between neurochemical changes during treatment that make the ADHD brain operate more like a neurotypical brain.
Bios: Mitch Mccarrell has taught Special Education for over twenty years, and specialized in working with ADHD students. He has been diagnosed as ADHD and take medication for it. He has attended numerous national seminars and studied the works of ADHD experts such as Dr. Russell Barkely, Dr. Ned Hallowell, Dr. John Ratey, Dr. Ari Tuckman, and Dr. Ted Mandlekorn, who operates Puget Sound Behavioral Clinic on Mercer Island.
