Brand new YES Prep elementary schools to welcome students

(HOUSTON) – Teachers at the newest schools in Houston were setting up sanitizer, taping classroom areas for social distancing and more this week while decorating their classrooms in anticipation of rolling out the welcome mat for hundreds of new students on the first day of school. On Monday, Aug. 16, school bells will ring for the first time at YES Prep Southside Elementary and YES Prep North Forest Elementary. The schools will open to inaugural pre-Kindergarten through second grade classes and grow students into grades 3-5 in subsequent years. YES Prep Public Schools is expanding to support more students just as families are seeking accelerated learning and social-emotional services to help students recover from the ongoing impact of COVID-19. "Our teachers and staff have heard the concerns of families in the Southside and North Forest communities about their children's grade-level performance and other significant impacts from COVID-19," YES Prep Public Schools CEO Mark DiBella said. "We are eager to warmly welcome students and their families to our newest schools dedicated to providing a fun and inspiring environment with accelerated learning, caring support systems, and whatever children may need to recover from this crisis and thrive." All of YES Prep's tuition-free public school campuses provide free breakfast and lunch, devices, transportation, special education, English-language learning, healthcare and mental health support services, athletics, fine arts and other services to more than 17,000 students across 23 campuses. New for this school year: students will have access to on-campus vaccines and COVID testing; and uniforms will not be part of the dress code.
