PORTSMOUTH, RI — An infant, two children and two women suffered serious injuries in a crash Thursday morning in Portsmouth. The crash happened just after 9 a.m., on West Main Road, near Melville Elementary School. Police said one of the cars crossed over the center of the road and hit the other vehicle head-on. One of the drivers, a 32-year-old woman, had to be extricated from her car, according to police. Her three children — a 13-year-old, a 5-year-old and an infant, were also hurt in the crash, as was a 34-year-old woman driving the other vehicle, police said. All were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries. Portsmouth police said Bristol officers helped with traffic control, while Portsmouth, Tiverton, Newport and Middletown fire departments helped treat the injured people.
