Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Thursday August 12th, 2021! First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 99 Low: 66. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: The Sacramento City Council voted on Tuesday to move forward with a massive $100M siting plan for the unhoused population in Sacramento. The plan would create 20 temporary Safe Ground shelter sites. It was a hotly debated topic, with detractors saying that most of the 16 sites that have already been identified were concentrated in certain areas of the city, creating an undue stress on those areas. At the end, though, the plan was unanimously approved by the council. (ABC10)It was a Bunny Bonanza at the Bradshaw Animal Shelter last Sunday! Due to several rabbits coming into the shelter pregnant this summer, the shelter was overwhelmed with 30 rabbits for adoption. The event, hosted by Friends of Unwanted Rabbits (FUR), successfully found forever homes for six rabbits at the event and several before the event due to social media posts. That's a huge number of rabbit adoptions for a single month! There are still a few rabbits looking for homes, if you are interested. (Saccounty.net) The US Senate passed a large infrastructure bill on Tuesday and if passed by the House, Sacramento would see some much needed funding for infrastructure locally. There are many ideas of how to spend the money, from an I-5 connector between Elk Grove and Hwy 50 near El Dorado Hills, to shoring up levees and extending light rail to the airport. Representative Ami Bera has said that he has been told to be on call for a House vote as early as next week. (CBS Sacramento) La Familia Counseling Center has started training people in the community to be "vaccine influencers." Sacramento County leaders, The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente experts will be educating residents on how to become trusted sources and inform the community about the COVID-19 vaccines. The trainings will be conducted in Spanish with simultaneous translation to English. The first trainings took place yesterday, but recordings will be posted online at saccollab.org and saccounty.net/COVID-19. (KCRA3)McClellan Airport is a hub of activity for fighting the fires that are raging in Northern California. The airport is home to thirteen air tankers that carry fire retardant to drop on the fires to slow their progress. One DC10 can hold 9,400 gallons of fire retardant and they fly sunup to sundown when conditions allow. Cal Fire Capt. Austin Palmiere says that fire retardant remains one of the most effective tools at slowing wildfire, even on exceptionally dry vegetation. And a review of the website of the company that provides retardant to agencies around the world, confirms it is environmentally friendly. (FOX40) Send flowers today to someone you care about.
