Valley Forge's Schuylkill River Bridges Wins Regional Award

VALLEY FORGE, PA — The new bridges over the Schuylkill River have received regional recognition for its engineering ingenuity. The bridges carrying Route 422 over the water in Valley Forge have received a "Best Project" in the highway and bridge category in the Engineering News-Record's (ENR) MidAtlantic's Regional Best Projects competition. The structures, which feature eight lanes altogether, also cross over a railroad, streets, and the Schuylkill River Trail. They were designed by Urban Engineers to help reduce congestion in the rapidly growing King of Prussia area. "We are excited to congratulate all of the team members, including JBC Associates, on the completion of this project, which is deservedly being recognized as a Best Project by ENR MidAtlantic," Mark Kinnee, Urban's senior vice president and COO, said in a statement. "We are proud of our client, PennDOT, and our staff who have worked tirelessly to see this project through to the end." The bridges include two through-lanes, a future use lane in each direction, and auxiliary lane on each side for travel between the Route 23 and Route 363 interchanges. They were also designed carefully to match the aesthetics of the river, down to the tulip-shaped column piers, and treatments on the road surface. It's not the first time the project has been honored. Just months ago, it was named Project of the Year by the American Society of Highway Engineers Delaware Valley chapter.
