Description

By Samuel Stebbins, 24/7 Wall St. Raleigh 2021-08-12 The rapidly spreading Delta variant is fueling a surge in new cases of COVID-19 and adding urgency to the vaccination effort. So far, an estimated 166,861,912 Americans have been fully vaccinated, or 51.0% of the U.S. population. So far, states have largely managed their own vaccination coordination efforts — and some have proven more effective than others. In North Carolina, 44.8% of the population are fully vaccinated, lower than the U.S. average. Lower than average vaccination rates in North Carolina appear to be attributable in part to a greater prevalence vaccine hesitancy and resistance among residents. As of August 10, North Carolina has received about 12,410,600 vaccinations and administered about 79.9% of those doses. Meanwhile, the virus continues to spread. In total, there have been 1,071,137 confirmed cases of the virus in North Carolina as of August 10 — or 10,316 for every 100,000 people. For context, there have been 10,899 known infections for every 100,000 people nationwide. All COVID-19 and vaccination data used in this story are current as of August 10, 2021. These are all the counties in North Carolina where COVID-19 is slowing (and where it's still getting worse). Can't see the article's infographic?
