Description

Architectural historian Andrew Alpern presents New York City’s most impressive entrances “First impressions count” has been the watchword since the first luxury apartment house opened in 1884. Entrance doors and their embellishment set the mood of an apartment building and form the dividing line between public and private space, serving multiple functions: to welcome yet protect; attract yet repel; impress yet be reticent. Andrew Alpern’s latest book, Posh Portals, highlights the best of the city’s most impressive entrances. Discover over 100 years of entryways, both celebrated and overlooked, from Gothic revival to Art Deco—and the stories behind them. Alpern is an architectural historian, an architect, attorney, native Manhattanite, and an expert on historic apartment houses. This is an in-person event. In accordance with New York City mandate, all guests must have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccine (CDC card or photo, Excelsior Pass, CLEAR Health Pass, or other digital record) will be required. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Please arrive 30 minutes early to check in. Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks. Founded in 1898, the mission of The National Arts Club is to stimulate, foster, and promote public interest in the arts and to educate the American people in the fine arts.
