Description

Join Gastro Obscura's co-author Cecily Wong and Columbus culinary guru Jim Budros for lunch and conversation at Giuseppe's Ritrovo! At a special fall ticketed luncheon at Giuseppe’s Ritrovo in Bexley, meet Gastro Obscura co-author Cecily Wong who will talk with Columbus culinary legend Jim Budros! Continent by continent, country by country, Gastro Obscura takes up the mantle of Atlas Obscura to radically expand our sense of wonder about the world—in this case, what humans eat and drink, which turns out to be far more marvelous than we could ever imagine! A limited number of tickets at $60 will include lunch and Wong’s book (including tax), which she will sign after the program. We’ve been stuck at home for long enough! Tonight, you can get out and taste the world again! From those ever-curious, ever-quirky minds behind the #1 New York Times bestselling Atlas Obscura, with over 800,00 copies in print, comes an unputdownable guide that marries our endless appetite for travel with our insatiable interest in food. Continent by continent, country by country, Gastro Obscura takes up the mantle of Atlas Obscura to radically expand our sense of wonder about the world—in this case, what humans eat and drink, which turns out to be far more marvelous than we could ever imagine. A lavishly illustrated food-lover’s gift of nearly 500 dishes, ingredients, traditions, and experiences, Gastro Obscura has it all! Discover English bog butter. “Threads of God” pasta (only three women know how to make it). The best black bean fritter restaurant in Brazil. The world’s largest floating restaurant. A croissant museum in Poland. Focusing as much on food’s place in our lives as well as our bellies, the book covers history—the network of ancient Roman fish sauce factories. Culture—picture four million women gathering to make rice pudding. Travel—scale China's Mount Hua to reach a sacred tea house. Festivals—chase a wheel of double Gloucester at Britain’s annual Cooper’s Hill cheese rolling competition. And such truly surprising delicacies as sturgeon spinal cord, blood tofu, stinkbug tacos, and more. Cecily Wong is a writer at Atlas Obscura, and the author of the novel Diamond Head, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, recipient of an Elle Readers' Prize, and voted a best debut of the Brooklyn Book Festival. She lives in Oregon. Jim Budros is a Columbus culinary institution. He founded a chain of restaurants called City Barbeque. But by day, Jim is a successful financial planner, named more than once as one of the best financial advisors in the United States by Worth magazine. His lifelong joy, talent, and insight about food began as a twelve-year-old attending Boy Scout camping trips. He has had a lifetime of shopping, cooking, competing, gardening, restaurant reviewing, restaurant founding, and teaching. He even carts around town a large, mobile wood-fired pizza oven, chatting and cooking and feeding crowds who gather with curiosity. Gramercy Books is a locally-owned, independently-minded neighborhood bookstore located in the heart of Bexley, Ohio (just outside of downtown Columbus) that opened in December of 2016. Inspiration and discovery through books is cultivated in a variety of events throughout the year that include author visits and festivals, book signings, poetry readings, a monthly book club, and songwriter performances. Gramercy Books shares space with Kittie’s bakery café.
