Description

NAILA AND THE UPRISING (2017)(Not Rated) Running time of 1 hour and 16 mins. Naila and the Uprising is a 2017 film directed by award-winning filmmaker and Just Vision's Creative Director, Julia Bacha (director of Budrus and co-director of My Neighbourhood) and produced by Just Vision's Education and Public Engagement Manager, Rula Salameh and Rebekah Wingert-Jabi (co-director of My Neighbourhood). Executive Producers include Just Vision's Executive Director, Suhad Babaa, along with Abigail E. Disney, Gini Reticker, Deirdre Hegarty, Joan Platt and the Women Donors Network. The film follows a woman from Gaza, Naila, who joins a clandestine network of women who are determined to make the world recognize Palestine's right to self-determination. When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in 1987, Naila must make a choice between love, family, and freedom. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh whose story weaves through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history -- the First Intifada in the late 1980s. Using evocative animation, intimate interviews, and exclusive archival footage, this film brings out of anonymity the courageous women activists who have remained on the margins of history -- until now. While most images of the First Intifada paint an incomplete picture of stone-throwing young men front and center, this film tells the story that history overlooked – of an unbending, nonviolent women’s movement at the head of Palestine’s struggle for freedom. While the First Intifada provides the backdrop for Naila and the Uprising, its lessons transcend that particular time and place. Through the experience of countless women engaged at all levels of society, we learn what is possible when women take the lead in struggles for rights and justice -- from a movement's inception to peace talks -- and what we lose when they are stripped of their roles. Echoing struggles around the world, we also witness the tremendous power of nonviolent organizing: women's committees, drawing on all the hallmarks of civil resistance, were able to mobilize hundreds of thousands through massive street rallies, mobile health clinics, underground schools and concerted boycott campaigns, sustaining the uprising while generating indigenous self-sufficiency. In Naila and the Uprising we see how women-led civil resistance can stir the masses, put pressure on power-holders, and affect real structural change. PLEASE PURCHASE ONE (1) TICKET PER PERSON. ONE (1) admission ticket PER PERSON is $13 for one movie, Naila and the Uprising, or $20 for a double feature of Naila and the Uprising (starts at 7:30 pm) and Paradise Now (starts at 9:30 pm). A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). The Palestine Children's Relief Fund was established in 1992 by concerned humanitarians in the USA to bring injured and sick children for free medical care they could not get locally. Since 1992, PCRF has sent over 2,000 sick and injured children for free medical care, as well as sponsored hundreds of volunteer medical teams from all over the world to treat tens of thousands of sick and injured youths in local hospitals. PCRF also has built two pediatric cancer departments in Palestine and has several more major programs and projects taking place to help support the development of a sustainable health-care system there. PCRF is a grassroots organization depending on the support of thousands of volunteers all over the world to help achieve its humanitarian mission. PCRF envisions a world where all children in the Middle East have access to quality medical care, regardless of nationality, religious or political affiliation, and specialized health services for children are independent and developed at the highest standards. PCRF's mission is to provide medical and humanitarian relief collectively and individually to Arab children throughout the Levant, regardless of their nationality, politics or religion.
