NEWTON, MA — In response to this week's heat wave, the City of Newton has released a list of places where residents can go to cool off, including the Senior Center, Free Library, and local businesses.
The Newton Senior Center, located at 345 Walnut St., will be open for anyone who needs a place to be in air conditioning from Wednesday, August 11 through Friday August 13 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Newton Free Library, located at 330 Homer St., is open from Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Other options for cooling off include the city's movie theaters, Showcase SuperLux at 55 Boylston St. and West Newton Cinema at 1296 Washington St., and The Shops at Chestnut Hill, which is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Newton residents over age 60 can call 617-796-1660 for rides to any of the above locations. In addition, everyone is eligible for a $2 ride on NewMo from anywhere in Newton to the Newtonville commuter rail stop.
The city also has two locations where residents can go swimming to cool off, including Crystal Lake on Lake Ave. in Newton Highlands and Gath Pool on Albermarle Rd. in West Newton. These swimming spots will both be free through Saturday, August 14.
