WAUKESHA, WI—The Waukesha Fire Department is still collecting new or slightly used adult men's and women's shoes that will be donated to the veterans at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Waupaca.
Only 178 pairs of shoes have been donated since Aug. 6 and the goal is to collect 351, according to the City of Waukesha.
Soles for Souls, organized by members of fire departments across the state of Wisconsin, was created to honor the 8 EMTs/ Paramedics and 343 FDNY firefighters that died on September 11, 2001.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center, and the goal is to collect at least 351 pairs of shoes in remembrance of those that lost their lives that day.
You can drop off shoes at one of these locations:
Fire Station #1 - 130 W. St. Paul AvenueFire Station #2 - 1714 Pearl StreetFire Station #3 - 2440 Hwy 59Fire Station #4 - 1700 Northview RoadFire Station #5 - 3051 Summit Avenue.Shoes will be collected through Aug. 31 at all fire stations in the City of Waukesha. On Sept. 11, representatives from Local 407 will take all shoes to the Wisconsin State Firefighters and EMS Memorial Park in Wisconsin Rapids.
A memorial service will be held at noon. After the service, the shoes will be taken to the veterans home.
