Lindenhurst Wants To Hear From Residents On Marijuana Sales

LINDENHURST, NY— Long Island municipalities have until the end of 2021 to decide if they will opt out of the New York State law allowing recreational marijuana sales. Villages and townships can opt out this year and opt in at a later date but opting in before December 31, 2020 is a final decision. The Village of Lindenhurst announced this week they are holding a public survey to hear residents' opinions on the matter. The survey, available here, seeks to collect input on a forthcoming local law that will determine if Lindenhurst will allow or opt out of marijuana dispensaries to operate inside the village and if marijuana use will be permitted in public spaces like parks. "As the Village Board works toward a decision on these matters regarding recreational marijuana within our borders, we feel it is important to hear from our residents, as there are strong, valid arguments on both sides of the debate." If Lindenhurst Village opts out, according to the March state law, a referendum can be be held if residents collect signatures from at least 10% of the total votes cast in the Village for governor in the last election.
