CAMBRIDGE, MA — After almost 90 years in operation, the Mayflower Poultry Company is leaving its East Cambridge location and saying goodbye to its iconic 'Live Poultry Fresh Killed' sign. The 6-foot tall yellow chicken sign will is set to hit the auction block when the shop closes its doors by the end of the month. Gaining massive popularity over the years, owner Jim Gould decided to trademark the sign in 2005 and used it to sell "Live Poultry, Fresh Killed" merchandise. The building that housed the butcher shop at 621 Cambridge Street was sold for $5 million, according to Middlesex County property records. The Boston Globe reported that Mayflower Poultry, now running most of their business through wholesale, said they would no longer need a storefront. Instead, the owner will be moving the company to Boston's Newmarket Square with no storefront or retail operation. While there is no minimum set for the sign, there is a $2,500 deposit required to bid. The butcher shop at 621 Cambridge Street is set to auction off the 6-foot tall sign on August 26.
